PIGLET (Mk1 #5) Pt1
This was by far the cleanest looking golf I've owned so far, I loved it, I raced it, and I still miss it sometimes. Where this one began, a mate at the time found this flyer and bought the car straight away...
This car was originally built by Tom Drewer (pictured here). This was his successful hill climber and he has since moved onto bigger and better things racing all kinds of crazy fast cars overseas. Lucky for me it landed in my lap minus a few parts my mate took from it.
In the driveway the day I took possession of it :)
There were a few mods but most importantly was what was under the bonnet. A 1.8 twin cam KR on a pair of 45mm webers taken from a Mk2 GTI, extractors and a 5 speed box.
The first thing I did using the remains of Spanky as a table was to give the eyebrow that came off my first golf a fresh coat of paint.
Much better.
I also decided to run a front bumper. Although I much prefer them without I didn't want to risk any front end damage.
I also made up an upper strut brace and got that on there too.
<3
Next up to brace things better was front and rear sway bars.
I sent the sway bars to the powder coaters along with the rims from my first golf.
Perfecto! This has GTI brakes fitted as well along with the bigger brake booster from a mk2.
The front sway bar went on just fine but it did hang low :/
I didn't really like the head cover being red so off it came...
And back on with a fresh coat of black.
A few weeks passed and I ended up going to a mates place up in the hills to play some golf.
I did a bunch of small jobs, tweaking things here and there.
Not sure how but at some point we decided to make me an enormous rear tower brace.
Not long after I got this car we went for a run with some of the guys from VWWatercooled down to Victor Harbor and back - 12/10/08.
Always be friendly in a Volkswagen...
On the return trip we were heading over a large open hill and a cross wind hit, the front of the car lifted and we literally jumped a foot to the left and ended up in the dirt. I backed right off and we lost the group but decided it was better to be safe than sorry. That night I ordered a chin spoiler for the front...
Parked at work the day after my chin splitter arrived, hopefully that will stop the issue of too much air getting under the car.
So much fun but I'm pretty confident it was running rich haha.
A year of loving twin cam life later and I wanted to give local motorsport a go. I entered the Monarto Motorkhana 14/3/09 It was pretty hard on my car and I had to retire it half way through the event.
Below is the vid of our day...
Poor little fella :)
Just two weeks later I was planning on taking Piglet to a Show'N'Shine so I had to get to work cleaning up all the mess I'd made. Out with the carpets.
Before...
And after, soooo much better.
I also picked up a fresh set of chrome bumpers.
After 2 weeks of cleaning and fixing things, it was the day before the event and the car was looking pretty sweet.
This brings us to Day Of The Volkswagen 29/3/09.
You would never know just a couple of weeks earlier I was thrashing this poor thing in a dusty paddock within an inch of it’s life :)
We had a fun day, met loads of new VW people, and had an awesome introduction to the greater Volkswagen community here in South Australia.
Continued here.
