NUGGET (Mk1 #3)
With Oblina being a bit rough we decided to have a hunt for a new daily and sure enough a week or so later Nugget came to live with us. We got this one cheap for only $500 as someone had thrown a tin of grey house paint over it :(
But with a weekend of cleaning it came up great. I was pretty happy as it had Koni adjustable shocks all round and an injected 1.8 under the hood.
Anyway we drove Nugget around for a couple of years before he died, the gearbox let go, dumped all the oil out and the push rod fused to the clutch. I’d always wanted to give an engine swap a go and we did have Oblina just sitting there...
Don’t judge me alright haha the tyre counter balance worked very well in helping get the motor out!
With Oblina’s heart out it was time to get started on Nugget.
With one engine removal under my belt I was keen to get stuck into my second...
This one went much smoother as you’d expect, especially with the first motor sitting there for reference.
While I was there I thought I would have a go at swapping out the scratched windscreen in Nugget.
I don’t want to talk about it...
It was a few couple of weekends and a steep learning curve but I made it. Two engine removals, one engine install, a windscreen replacement :/ and two cars stripped.
It was time to say goodbye to what was left of The First and Oblina.
For what they were I really loved these cars, even though one never ran and the other didn’t like to start :)
Let’s skip ahead a year… I’ve since bought three more mk1’s, Spanky, Piglet and a shell I’m not sure what to do with yet. Nugget had been sitting for many months as a parts car and it was time to say goodbye.
This car saw my first engine swap and many, many mechanical repairs. I did make a mess of it but I was teaching myself and what I learned has paved the way for every Golf I've had since.
Ahh the day we said goodbye, I saved all the parts that were worth saving. I really loved this car, looking back I wish I'd kept it.
Another one gone to the Volkswagen Gods :'(
The end.
